Your Mom Has Been a Caregiver to Your Dad for Years but You Feel It’s Time for Them to Consider Assisted Living

Assisted Living in Fairhope AL

Bringing up the topic of assisted living to your parents can be very challenging, especially when one or both parents don’t feel it is necessary. After your dad had a stroke three years ago, your momAssisted-Living-Fairhope-AL has been doing all she can to care for him and everything else around the house as well. You have seen how much this responsibility has taken a toll on her health and feel they could benefit from moving into an assisted living facility.

Your mom has been struggling lately to take care of her own needs, the needs of your dad, and the house they have dwelled in for more than 40 years. She also takes great pride in filling her wifely duties and isn’t willing to accept the fact that she can’t keep going at the pace she has been.

While dropping by for lunch one day, you decided to broach the topic of assisted living. You tried to explain the benefits of not having to keep up with maintaining the yard work, other outdoor household chores, and even some of the responsibilities required inside the home. It was a difficult conversation because your mom really did not see the problems that were so evident to you.

As you stopped by more frequently, you began to point out some of the issues that you saw could be hazardous to both of them. The laundry was piling up, light bulbs needed to be replaced, and there were numerous safety measures that needed to be put into practice as well.

It took about a month of repeatedly stopping by throughout the week and having the same conversation with your mom before she finally agreed that she couldn’t keep up with everything herself. You assured her that there was nothing to be ashamed of and that you were concerned about the safety and well-being of both of them.

The search began for an assisted living facility that would meet the needs of both your parents. Once the move took place and they were settled in to their new apartment, you began to see a big difference in not just your mom but your dad as well.

Your mom was much happier not have all the stress of keeping up with household chores and being the primary caregiver to your dad. They even made some new friends and found themselves actually being more active.

Assisted living allows elderly individuals to remain as independent as they can be without pushing them to the limit. Staff is there to help with whatever you need. The best part is that you will find yourself having more time to enjoy life and the activities you used to.
