Theodore, AL – Preparing a Loved One for a Move to Assisted Living
It took quite a bit of time for Stacy’s mother to finally agree that assisted living was the best option for her. Stacy had been worried about her mother’s well-being, especially because she had suffered a mild stroke not too long ago and was living alone in a large house. Just maintaining the house and keeping it clean seem to be a full-time job. Over time, Stacy began to stop by on a regular basis to check in on her mother. She ended up helping to clean, cook, do laundry, and a variety of other tasks.
One night, the phone rang and it was her mother calling because she fell getting out of bed. Fortunately the phone was right by her nightstand and she was able to call. Her mother escaped without any serious injuries, but the next day Stacy sat down to talk to her about other living arrangements.
At first her mother was wondering why she couldn’t move in with Stacy and her family. Her mother had certain misconceptions about assisted living. She thought it was for people who were bedridden, who needed to be taking care of around-the-clock, or people who were just waiting for the end of their life to arrive. She wasn’t ready to give up various activities, like spending time with friends. Stacy encouraged her mother to at least visit one assisted living facility to see what it was like. After a few conversations, she finally agreed and they visited one that was not too far away from her home. Within the first 20 minutes of this visit, Stacy’s mother was convinced that this was the right option for her.
