If your elderly loved one is having some difficulty living at home, then your first instinct might be to recommend that they consider moving into assisted living. There’s no right answer to this question. There are benefits to moving into assisted living, just as there are benefits to having a live in home care professional come to your loved one’s home.  So which one is better, you ask again?

It’s not a matter of which one is better, but rather which one would provide the right level of support an opportunities that your loved one might want, or need.

Assisted living would offer your loved one the opportunity to no longer worry about some of the issues that they need to deal with while owning a home, or having other responsibilities.  This would include not having to deal with maintenance, and upkeep for your home.

On the other hand, if you choose to have a live in home care provider, then you will be able to remain in the comfort of a home that you may have lived in for a long time.  This could be important for you if you still enjoy the neighborhood, have friends close by, and would rather not have to pack up all of your belongings, and move to a new address.

As you can see, there are going to be advantages, but if you require a higher level of care, and if you aren’t able to tend to your own needs, or if you don’t have many friends still living in the area, then you might want to consider assisted living rather than a live in home care provider.

This is because most assisted living facilities provide a wealth of opportunities for residents to get to know one another, or spend time alone in their private residence. They will also tend to provide a number of activities that residents can take part in if they so choose.

Since, there is no true right or wrong answer about which is better, it comes down to a question about what you want for the future.  If you want to meet new people with similar interests as you, and be in a place that has a lot of activities going on, then you may want to consider assisted living.
