The Inside Track on Choosing the Right Assisted Living Facility

Assisted Living in Spanish Fort AL

It may have taken many months to encourage your elderly father to at least look into the prospect of assisted-living. At first, he may have been adamantly against the entire notion. He was Assisted-Living-in-Spanish-Fort-ALcomfortable in his own home, even though he was having difficulty keeping up with the maintenance and cleaning.

Once he finally agreed to at least look into assisted living, you may have felt relieved.  However, you wanted to make sure he chose the right facility.

Below are a few things to keep in mind that can help you and your elderly loved one make the best decision about assisted living:

Understand his current needs.

It’s important to understand the challenges your father is dealing with at the moment. He may be having difficulty getting around, such as getting out of bed or bathing. You want a facility that can provide the support he needs when he needs it.

Understand his potential future needs.

As people age, they generally begin to lose strength and the ability to take care of themselves in different ways. Where the senior is at the moment can offer some pretty good clues about where things will progress in the next several months and few years. Make sure the facility will be able to handle the increased challenges he’ll face, as well as increased need for support.

Consider memory care assisted living if necessary.

If your father has been diagnosed with some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s, he may be best suited for a memory care assisted living facility. This would be a community that is specifically designed to help those with certain forms of dementia and other memory related problems.

They have experienced staff members on hand to help with a variety of tasks. They will also have activities specifically designed to help those with dementia. This type of facility may also have visiting nurses and doctors more frequently, depending on the way they are set up.

Focus on the environment.

You want to make sure the community where your father will live is professional, courteous, and pleasant. It should be welcoming and the staff should be positive and highly experienced at helping other seniors maximize their quality of life.
