3 Things You Might Not Have Known about Assisted Living Today

Assisted Living in Pascagoula AL

September 14th through the 20th is National Assisted Living Week and for anybody who is considering the prospect of moving into this particular type of living situation, here are three things you might not have known about it before.

1. It is nothing close to what assisted living was four decades ago.

Many people have certain preconceived notions about assisted living. Most of these preconceptions are actually associated with nursing home care, but assisted living just four decades ago pales in comparison to what it is today.

Today’s assisted living facilities are more like upscale residential apartment complexes. They can have entertainment facilities, exercise rooms, a full, high-quality restaurant, and more. Gone are the days of cafeterias, sterile looking hallways and corridors, and the basic atmosphere of being left alone and ignored.

2. Support staff are incredibly caring individuals.

These support staff can help seniors in the middle of the night, during the day, with personal matters such as going to the bathroom or getting out of bed, and even playing games with them if the senior is looking for somebody to keep him company for a while.

3. Most assisted living facilities today offer transportation to various sites.

Elderly individuals may need to get to doctor’s appointments, the store, or want to visit the mall. Most of these facilities today have some type of transportation services, either as part of their own network or that they rely on through the community, that can allow their residents to get out, get exercise, and enjoy life on their own terms.

It may have been that some facilities in the past didn’t encourage their residence to get out and go to the store, head to the mall, walk around and get exercise, and do other things beyond the facility’s walls. However, today most administrators understand the value of getting fresh air, exercise, and more.

If you want to know more about assisted living, this may be National Assisted Living Week, but you can certainly find out from various communities in the area any time of the year.
